The headdress is now completed and I have used lots of the cluny designs that I have developed recently, together with other of my favourite own designs. Although it looks like a complete circle...it is not. It is open at the back, where the feathers come together on each side. This is where I shall be attaching the Juliette veil....not quite sure how yet, but I'm sure I'll work it out when the time comes!
I have decided to do the "hens and chicks" pattern, that is loved by many, to edge the wedding veil. I am using a size 2o thread with 3mm beads. Now, I know some of you will be thinking that this is rather thick thread for a delicate wedding veil, but in my many years of experience in making wedding veils with beaded tatted edgings, a very fine thread can only be seen when you are very close up to the bride, whereas a thicker thread really stands out from a distance. Also, I have found that thicker thread, together with lots and lots of beads, instead of weighing down the veil, makes it hang beautifully and has less tendencies to be as "fly away" in a breeze.
Oh my! This is absolutely stunning! Sure to become an heirloom in years to come!

ReplyDeleteI am using 3mm completely round pearl beads from The Craft Factory. The nice thing about these beads is that the hole in the centre is big enough to thread onto my Milward hook. The hole in some 3mm bead makes, is so small I have to use a needle threader to insert them.

ReplyDeleteLOVE what you have done! Hen and Chicks pattern isn't the used only for hankerchiefs. Does a good job on this veil. Even though I went the tiny delicate route with my tatting for my niece's wedding, this thicker thread has its place. And the bride will surely be proud to wear it!

It would be nice because it would be so nice for as many people as possible to see tatting as beautiful as this.

Whilst my face has gone bright red with embarrassment, I am absolutely bowled over by the truly wonderful comments. What seems to me to be just a simple variation on a beautiful art, others seem to think outstanding. It just shows that the same tatting techniques, arranged in a different way, can produce endless variations. Any tatter can achieve what I have done, sometimes it just takes a nudge in the right direction. I hope I have nudged a few other tatters into this direction! LOL
