Oval Doily in ecru from 2012

I had a request from Alley Cat asking if I had the PDF pattern for the Oval Doily I blogged about in January 2012
I had completely forgotten about posting the finished article so here it is in all its glory.
I have put the link to the pattern in my Free Pattern section.

Oval Coaster

I have designed this little coaster to go under three small oval china dishes that sit on my television stand. We have had a new system that includes a sound plinth and the sub woofers cause the little china dishes to vibrate and so I have made these small coasters to solve the problem.
I have used an antique Coates thread, size 40 in ecru and it measures about 4 inches by 3 inches and I have utilized split rings and split chains to climb out of the rows, so no cutting and fastening off until the end. If anyone would like me to put the pattern into PDF format I will do so.

Little Oval

I didn't have anything to do after I finished the Classic Doily and so I doodled with this little oval. It is done in size 40 Coates thread and measure about 6 inches across.

Oval Doily now test tatted

My dear friend, Stephanie, from across the pond, has very kindly test-tatted my Oval Doily. She has done it in a size 80 variagated thread, so that she could get the whole doily onto her scanner, as she doesn't have a digital camera.
Beautiful work, Stephanie!

Oval Doily in ecru now finished!

The doily is now finished. I have also finished the written pattern, but I have offered it to Georgia Seitz, to help raise funds for Palmettos sponsorship. If it is that she is not in a position to sell it to fellow tatters, then I will post it on my blog for free as usual.

Oval Doily in Ecru 3

Here is the doily, now a little bigger. I'm quite enjoying this pattern, it seems to be flowing naturally without having to re-do any rounds.

Oval Doily in Ecru - 2

Here, as promised, is a photograph of the next few rows of this new doily. So far each row has worked in very well.....no retro-tatting! Mind you, as it gets bigger, this will probably change! LOL!

Oval Doily in Ecru

Having finished all my projects and having nothing in particular to do I thought I would make an oval doily to put on my new television table, which itself is oval, and is in black glass.
This is the start. I have done a couple of more rounds and will post a picture when it is bigger still. I am writing the pattern out as I go, for a change. This makes life much easier.....trying to count stitches retrospectively is no joy. I am doing this one in an antique thread in size 40.

Oval doily in progress - completed

Here is my latest doily completed. I wanted an oval doily to go under glass on an oval occassional table that I have. The doily that is on it at the moment is an old one from a pattern book and I wanted to replace it with something that I had designed myself. I have used a very standard edging, with a few tweeks, that can be found on many old patterns.....but I think that it works well in this case.

I doubt if I will ever write out the pattern for this as I would have to rework it to make it absolutely perfect......maybe one day, when I am bored and looking for something challenging!

Oval Delight!

Here is the finished oval doily that I have called Oval Delight. I think that I will make some alterations in the future as I can see that if I did it a little bit differently it would make it even better. I will write up the pattern in a few days time, but then I need a break from tatting doilies. I'm going to spend the next few weeks knitting! LOL These will be for Christmas presents and so I had better get a move on!

Oval Doily Progression!

I thought you would all like to see how I get to a finished tatted item.

I wind a couple of shuttles and off I go and see what turns up. Before I started, the only vision I had was that this doily was going to be an oval.

The first attempt was a good shape but there were too many stitches and I could tell that to continue was only to going to make it worse and only keep bunching up.

The second attempt seemed to start well but as I progressed I was not happy with the shape! The 6th round had too many stitches but the 7th round didn't have enough and was starting to stretch and cup.

The third attempt, so far, is coming along nicley. I am happy with the shape and the rounds are lying beautifully without resorting to the iron!
I hope this shows that, even if the finished article ends up looking like any other doily, I am working solely out of my own head. Naturally we designers are all influenced by the years of tatting we have done in the past, but we are not re-inveneting the wheel here and there are only so many shapes that can be achieved. Having said that, when I have finished, I will scour my pattern books and surf the internet, hoping not to find something almost identicle! Only then will I put the pattern out to the public.

Oval Doily Coming Soon!

I am in the process of designing a new oval doily. It would appear that I have the doily bug at the moment! I have made a couple of false starts, but everything seems to be coming together now. I will post pics in the next couple of days.
