Bridal progress so far

The headdress is now completed and I have used lots of the cluny designs that I have developed recently, together with other of my favourite own designs. Although it looks like a complete circle...it is not. It is open at the back, where the feathers come together on each side. This is where I shall be attaching the Juliette veil....not quite sure how yet, but I'm sure I'll work it out when the time comes!

I have decided to do the "hens and chicks" pattern, that is loved by many, to edge the wedding veil. I am using a size 2o thread with 3mm beads. Now, I know some of you will be thinking that this is rather thick thread for a delicate wedding veil, but in my many years of experience in making wedding veils with beaded tatted edgings, a very fine thread can only be seen when you are very close up to the bride, whereas a thicker thread really stands out from a distance. Also, I have found that thicker thread, together with lots and lots of beads, instead of weighing down the veil, makes it hang beautifully and has less tendencies to be as "fly away" in a breeze.

70th Birthday Card

Here is the card that I promised to blog about in the previous post.

I have also included a picture of the verses inside the card.

Cards

Birthday cards are the order of the day today. My mother's 83rd birthday will be on Tuesday 16th February and I have made one to give from my husband and myself, and one to give from my son and his fiance.

I have one more to make for a friend, to give to a friend who will soon be 70. I have printed out the card and verse and made some of the flowers to decorate it with, but it's not quite finished yet. I will post a picture when it is completed.

Motifs completed so far

These are the motifs that I have completed so far, for future DIL's bridal headband. Sorry the picture is not of the best quality, but, as usual, I was in a hurry! LOL
Many more to do yet!

Headdress decision is made

For those who are following the saga of the bridal headdress for my future daughter-in-law, together we have come up with the final solution. She is going to have a full circle headress with a Juliette veil which drapes from the back.

The following picture is what she saw to make up her mind on the sort of thing she would like (but using the cluny rosettes and of course lots of other tatted motifs). We then developed it further into a full circle plus the little veil at the back to soften the shortness of her hair.

I have already made several motifs and wired them, plus some pearl tatting over wire (that will please Mark Myers), but there is still a lot more to do. I will post some pics as it developes.

I know she will look beautiful!

Bridal Headdress Cluny Motifs

These are the lates motifs I have designed that I intend to make into a bridal headdress. My future DIL wanted me to make her a tiara for the big day (which I have done...see previous post) but since her original request she developed breast cancer and has lost all her hair with the treatment.

Although the wedding is not until 4th September, her hair will still be very short, probably about 3 inches max and as such, I don't think that a tiara will be easy to wear. To soften the blow I entend to have one or two alternatives for her to wear, like these motifs made up onto a comb and also, I thought I might make a headband type. Originally she had not intended to wear a veil, but a little veil coming straight down from a combed headdress that can be worn at the back of the head would soften the shortness of her hair.

I will post more pics later in the process.
If anyone has any other ideas I would love to hear them.

Cluny Rosettes

These cluny rosettes are another idea I have had in making a bridal headdress.
They have been stiffened with sugar syrup.
I have almost finished another set of rosettes, but this time I have made them half ones and finished them off with beads. I shall have a go at stiffening them with PVA glue.
I will post a picture when they are done.

Stiffened Motifs

For any who are interested....I use twice the amount of sugar to the amount of water. For the tiara and motifs (I have put in my album) I used half cup of sugar to quarter cup of water. Put into a saucepan, bring to the boil gently, stirring constantly until all the sugar is dissolved and then boil rapidly for approximately 2 minutes. You want a syrup that is thin enough to soak into the tatting but not too thin that it will not dry very hard. (Only experimentation will give you the right results.)

Next, I dip the tatting in plain water first and blot up the excess. This allows the syrup to soak into the tatting much better. After allowing the syrup to cool slightly I then dip the tatting into the syrup, making sure that every bit of the tatting is completely covered by the syrup. Don't let the syrup cool too much otherwise it becomes too thick to handle. Take the tatting out of the syrup and blot away the excess with a damp cloth.

Shape the tatting by pulling into position and then place onto a baking sheet covered in alluminium foil and put into a slightly warm oven. I set my fan oven at about 75 degrees C. It mustn't be any hotter otherwise the tatting will brown! Keep a watch on it! I take it out after 5 minutes and move the pieces about so that they don't stick and then put them back in for another 5 minutes, which will probably be enough.

Try it and Happy Stiffening!

Stiffening tatting with boracic crystals

As many of you know I am in the process of designing a bridal tiara for my future daughter-in-law and, in the past, have always stiffened tiaras with a sugar syrup, as I want the tiara to be rock hard.

Many of our fellow tatters do not like using sugar syrup because they concerned with insect problems. I have never had this problem in the UK as it doesn't really get hot enough, for long enough, to cause a problem. Also it may have something to do with the fact that I bake my syrupped tatting in the oven!

Anyway....I thought I would try the boracic crystals favoured by many tatters, as it not only stiffens but sparkles as well. Weelllll! OK this is true. I dilligently stiffened my sample motifs of tatting with the borax and yes, they were fairly stiff, and yes, they did sparkle, but unfortunately, every time you touch the motif, the sparkly crystals come off onto my fingers.....just like a Christmas card.....which is not very good for an item that is going to be put into a bride's hair! Looks just like dandruff! LOL

Ah well back to the baked syrup. But before then, I am going to see how stiff I can get my motifs with PVA glue and will report back later.

Beaded Split Ring Tiara

Some time ago I posted about designing a bridal tiara for my future daughter-in-law....I was playing around with some motifs, but had to put them aside while Christmas and New Year came and went.

I picked up the project again a couple of days ago and this is what I have come up with. I only have to stiffen it, but I thought I would photograph it first to show a before and after.

I have used a thick shiny thread, that was not easy to work with, but looks really sparkly (the photo does not really pick the sheen up) and 6mm and 3mm sunrise pearl beads.

I will post again when I have stiffened and shaped it.

Cluny Cross Bookmark

My Mum asked me to make some bookmarks, so that she could give them to her new friends in the residential home that she is now in. I made the cross one that I had designed last year (Coates size 20) and also designed the variagated one (Lizbeth size 40). I then went on to make the cletic cross in yellow Lizbeth size 20 and maroon Coates size 20. This looks exactly the same front and back.
With this one (which is my favourite) I used the cross design but used clunies in the centre instead of rings and clunies in the corners instead of corner chains.

Latest video on split chain

Just to let everyone know that the video on the split chain is now completed and uploaded onto YouTube. Here is the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPXkMb2BV2g and also there is a permanent link on the right side bar of my blog under Video Demonstrations.

I have also included in the video, a way of doing a split ring, using just one shuttle and the ball thread.

As YouTube only accept videos to a mazimum of 10 minutes I had to do a fair bit of editing. I hope this doesn't spoil your enjoyment of the film, but I have still managed to cover the necessities!

Split chain video

Hello fellow tatters.

I am thinking of producing a short video to demonstrate the split chain. Do you think that it would be well received?

I don't mind doing it, as long as it would be useful to other tatters. For some reason, many tatters shy away from doing the split chain, and yet, once you get the hang of it, it really isn't difficult.....and such a useful tool to have at your fingertips!

DVD now completed

My tuition DVD is now finished! Originally I had produced my tuition for beginners as a computer disc for PCs only, but now, thanks to my genious son, it is available on DVD.

This means that it can now be played on any computer or DVD player. So much better to be able to see it on decent sized TV screen and play, pause and rewind, as much as a new tatter needs!

My DVD not only shows the very basic beginnings but also shows how to join in a new thread without a knot, split rings, self closing mock rings and the dreaded split chain!

I haven't uploaded it onto my web site yet, but if you would like to purchase a copy please email me.
