Here is the finished result of the first attempt.
Now that it is done I can see where there are too many stitches to allow it to lie flat. Even with wetting, blocking and pressing it does not sit well.
I am really looking forward to getting it right as I think it will then be a pretty doily.
I have used split chains and split rings to climb out of each row and therefore there is only one cut and hide ends at the very end!
Thank you to all who have suggested a name for this doily.

It is beautiful, Linda! I look forward to seeing how you change it.
Oh, Wow!
"getting it right as I think it will then be a pretty doily."
who wants to attack this first out here in comment world?....?!....
It's gorgeous!
It certainly is simply gorgeous!

You are so talented to be able to get it this good on the first attempt. I really like this design, especially the outer round. It's already a very pretty doily!
Linda,
Your work is always a true treat to get to see. No matter that it has too many stitches as you say, it's still lovely like you are! Thanks for sharing with us all. John says it all about it in the last statement line of his.
..lovin' the idea of eliminating many "cut and hide" ends. All I gotta do now is learn how to split chains and rings!
.. it is a beautiful piece!
Looks very nice, I really like it!!
Did you come up with a name for it yet??
Yes, Lily, I thought I would call it Coronet Doily.
I am on round 7 of the edited version and already it is looking much better, and yet, all I have done, it to reduce the stitch count by 2 stitches in each ring and 2 in each chain!
Wow~ It looks like beautiful~!!!
Sorry to be late in getting to this page but I am in awe at your skills in designing and I must say I love this new doily so now I look forward to seeing what you have done to alter it.

This is so elegant! How many hours does it take you to make something like this?
